Topographical Characteristics
Predominantly hilly and mountainous, Cebu's rugged mountain range starts from the Southernmost town of Santander, reaching all the way to the town of Bogo, down to Medellin and Daan Bantayan in the North, although some flat lands can also be found in the northern end of the Cebu. Its highest peak, Mount Manunggal, is approximately 1,000 meters above sea level.
Dimensions
Cebu is a narrow strip of land approximately 220 kms. long and 41 kms. at its widest portion. Its land area of 5,088 sq. kms. is 1.7% of the total land area of the country. The main island of Cebu is ringed by about 166 smaller islands and islets of which Mactan, Bantayan and Camotes are considered the largest.
The province is part of the Central Visayas Region, situated 584 kms. (365 miles) south of Manila. It is bounded on the east by the Camotes Sea, on the west by the Tanon Strait, on the north by the Visayan Sea and on the southeast by the Bohol Strait.
The province of Cebu has an abundance of beauty. The island's natural wonder is unmistakably seen from the central mountains to the coral sands. Most of the country's 8,120 species of flowering plants can be found in Cebu, of these 5,832 are unique to the country. At the Olango Bird Sanctuary, a marvelous experience for bird watchers is the sight of migrating birds from Russia enroute to Australia. Cebu is one of the best, if not the best beach-oriented destination in the Philippines. Some of the world's best scuba diving is located around Cebu's shores. Cebu is rich in metallic and non-metallic minerals. The province has the largest copper deposit not only in the country but also in Southeast Asia. Among the non-metallic minerals mined in commercial quantities are dolomite, limestone, Mactan stone, black stone, guano and siliceous sand.
